Art, Design and Photography - Amsterdam 2013

Students from the Art, Design and Photography BTEC level 3 and 2 courses visited Amsterdam for three days. Click the image to view the Gallery

Students travelled by ferry overnight and then by train to Amsterdam Central.

We explored the beautiful canals and bridges along the Jordaan District and the South Canals, exploring independent art galleries along the way. Students were asked to map along the waterways documenting the everyday strange oddities of the city. Students travelled around the city by Tram, Bus and Train visiting both the Stedelijk Museum and the Foam Galley to research contemporary Art and Photography artists.

The aim of the trip was to develop an understanding of different cultural norms and architectures of the city by gathering resources, sketches and photographs that will contribute to their on-going investigations for their units and for a group exhibition in the show.

The Art, Design and Photography 'End of Year Show' is a fantastic forum to showcase the students work. The show will be open from the 17th to 21st June and we welcome members of the public, friends, family and prospective students to come and celebrate the students work. If you would like more details of our open day, our end of year show or our specialist courses, please email the college at: susierendell@bexley.ac.uk

Bexley College, host of the London Region Guild of Bricklayers Competition

Bexley College was proud to host the Guild of Bricklayers London Regional Craft Competition 2013 on 27th March. Christopher Davies representing Lewisham College was awarded first place in the senior category, followed by Alfred Ofori Thompson from Hackney Community College in second position and Matthew Davey from East Kent College in third. In the junior category, Oliver Robert Camp representing Mid Kent College – Maidstone Campus took first place followed by Jake Cattemull from the College of North West London in second and in third, Michael Bolton of Barking & Dagenham College. Andrew Cainen, President of the Guild along with Danny Ridgeway, Principal of Bexley College were on site to present the awards to these deserving candidates.

Seven senior and eight junior competitors entered from ten colleges or training centres within the London Region for the chance to move forward to the National Guild Final held in June, gain recognition for their high standards of bricklaying and win prizes. For this heat, bricks were kindly donated by Wienerburger and Ward Homes with Ward Homes also contributing with special hi-vis jackets made especially for the day, an award which was won by Kerris Cashford for an outstanding contribution to the event plus a generous donation towards the running of the day. Trophies and medals were donated by Pantiles Trophies plus there were cash prizes and for the first place in each category, a laser level; one donated by Flahive Brickwork and the other purchased with sponsorship funds.
