Course Description

This course focuses on graphic design, visual communication and print based media production. The course offers a taste of how the graphic design and print based media industries operate. Students will be constructing graphic design projects using methods such as photography, illustration, typography, layout and traditional and modern print based techniques. These methods and techniques will be used to design final outcomes using industry standard programmes such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design. Final project outcomes can include a wide range of visual concepts such as magazine design, posters, album covers and promotional designs. Students will also study Functional Skills English and/or Maths. Year 1 covers the Subsidiary Diploma in Creative Media Production (Print-Based media). Year 2 covers BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production (Print-Based media).

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE’s Grade C or above, including English OR BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production (at Merit or above) or similar area, level 2 English and Maths and successful interview with college staff

Assessment Methods

All units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. Students must pass each unit to get the Diploma qualification at the end of the course. Students are also required to undertake an examination in Functional skills English and Maths.

Progression

Most students will go on to Higher Education courses in Media Production at university or a career in media or a related area.
