On the 30th June at Liverpool community college Arthur Saunders gained the bronze award, third place in the National Final for the Guild of Bricklayers. He was one of twelve entrants all of which were of the highest standard and came from Plymouth, Leeds, Wiltshire Darlington amongst others. He won a super silver plaque, a level, tape, jointer and a cash prize of £30.00. The well organised event was sponsored by Tarmac and Wienerberger Bricks, the Guild Of Bricklayers secretary, Dennis Westwood was delighted with Arthur's achievement as it is the first time that there has been an entrant from London for several years let alone command a place in the top three!
It was a long day for Arthur and myself, leaving home at 03:45 and not returning until 11:15 hours. Our travel was sponsored by Arthur's employer, Flahive Brickwork who cannot do enough for there apprentices of which I currently have six at level 2 and level 3. On top of that he has just given two of Alex's full timers jobs on one of his sites in Bermondsey. So full credit again to Flahive Brickwork who were also recognised in the Employer Engagement awards with Bexley Council.
We in the brickwork department are thrilled to have had Arthur as a student for the past three years, not only is he a competent bricklayer but he is a very good lad who is held in high esteem by his employer.
